Set amidst the brutal inter-ethnic wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 90’s, Go West tells the story of a young gay couple in love and in turmoil. Kenan, a muslim cellist, and Milan, a Serbian student, must find a way to flee the repressive Balkans for Milan’s father’s home in eastern Bosnia. When they are detained along the way by serbian soldiers, Kenan, has to pass himself off as a woman and poses as Milan’s fianceé. The two lovers make it safely to Milan’s small hometown, where Milan and “Milena” are eagerly awaited by Milan’s father and a host of colorful characters. Although they have made it this far in their journey, the young couple still hope to reach the West, where they dream of finding acceptance, peace, and happiness. Ahmed Imamovic’s controversial new film, though shunned by conservatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emotionally and successfully draws our attention to subjects once thought to be taboo in Eastern Europe.
